Vinho Verde Blanco
Top 10% wine in the UK
Blend: 94% Loureiro + 6% Albariño
From: Portugal, Vinho Verde DOC
By: Miguel Pessanha @ Quinta de Azevedo
The very northern end of Portugal is home to one of the country’s most idiosyncratic wines, Vinho Verde. This good-value example, by Quinta de Azevedo, is a dry, slightly spritzy wine with floral aromas and plenty of citrus, pear and stony minerality on the palate.
Quinta de Azevedo is one of the pioneers of high-end Vinho Verde, choosing to focus on quality rather than quantity.
The vines are trained in a modern style, rather than on the region’s traditional pergolas, which helps keeps vines healthy in the rainy region while ensuring they receive plenty of sunlight.
After a temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is aged on its lees for four months, helping to add complexity.
It is then lightly fined and filtered before bottling.
