Blend: Syrah + Cinsault + Cab Sauvignon
From: Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
By: Hochar Family @ Château Musar
The Musar Jeune is the baby offering of Lebanon’s most iconic winery, Château Musar. Made from a blend of syrah, cabernet sauvignon and cinsaut, it is a medium-bodied red wine with plenty of red and black fruit on the palate, with soft, smooth tannins and more than a little spice.
The family-owned estate was planted in the Bekaa Valley in 1930, and is today run by the third generation of winemakers. Musar was the first estate in Lebanon to farm organically, and the wines are made with as little intervention as possible, using ambient yeasts for fermentation and foregoing fining and filtration. Musar Jeune sees no oak during the maturation process, with ageing taking place in concrete vats.
While not as celebrated as the estate’s flagship red, Musar Jeune is a popular wine. Decanter gave the 2012 vintage 88 points, while Wine Enthusiast gave the 2010 vintage 90 points.
