Blend: 85% Syrah + 15% Petit Verdot
From: South Africa, Robertson Valley
By: Johan Stemmet @ Excelsior
Ripe, red wines from South Africa offer a bridge between the old world and the new. This shiraz, grown in the Breede River Valley, is an excellent example of this, showing spicy red and black fruit, with clove, liquorice and vanilla characters. It offers great value for money, and is perfect for pairing with grilled or roasted meats.
The Excelsior wines are made on 220 hectares of land surrounding Robertson. Here, the limestone-rich soils have proved well-suited to grape growing, contributing to the minerality and complexity of the finished wines.
After harvest, the shiraz is destemmed and fermented in stainless steel before undergoing malolactic fermentation. Around a third is then matured in French and American oak to add depth to the finished wine, without obscuring the fruit.
