Blend: 100% Chkhaveri
From: Georgia, Chkhaveri
By: Gaioz Sopromadze
Gaioz Sopromadze’s family have been making wine for five generations, in the oldest winemaking country in the world. Georgia’s wine industry suffered a bit under Soviet rule but now passionate grape growers are working hard to get Georgia back on the wine map. Chkhaveri is a light bodied red fermented in traditional terracotta qvevri.
The small but perfectly formed Sopromadze vineyard and wine cellar is located in the town of Baghdati on the edge of the Ajameti forest. Gaioz is credited with being the first Georgian to create a wine from the native Chkhaveri grape, which are manually harvested and left to ferment in the qvevri; large terracotta amphorae buried in the ground. Chkhaveri, said to be a little like a Pinot Noir, is unfiltered and unfined.
