Brut Cuvee Speciale Champagne
Top 8% wine in the UK
Blend: 45% Pinot Noir + 35% Chardonnay + 25% Pinot Meunier
From: France, Champagne AOC
By: Fabrice Gass @ Domaine Alexandre Filaine
This small grower Champagne house is the brainchild of Fabrice Gass, a winemaker at Bollinger. This pinot noir-dominant blend is powerful and structured with spot-on acidity, showing notes of lime, apple, tangerine and a touch of floral delicacy. It is made in tiny quantities, with Gass farming just a single hectare of vines.
Domaine Alexandre Filaine is located in the village of Damery, on the border of the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne. The wine is drawn from eight small plots that are farmed organically, and fermentation takes place in old oak barrels with native yeasts. Winemaking at Filaine is the very epitome of hands on – bottles are riddled and disgorged by hand, and dosage is added by hand as well. Gass uses as little sulphur as possible in the winemaking process, and the wines do not go through malolactic fermentation.
This is a wine as rare as hens’ teeth, with reviews to match – Stephen Tanzer scored the wine 92, and Richard Hemming MW of JancisRobinson.com gave it 17/20.
Vivino users rate it a top wine with a stunning 3.8!
