Blend: 100% Nebbiolo
From: Italy, Sforzato Di Valtellina (Sfursat) DOCG
By: Mamete Prevostini
Only Nebbiolo grapes, harvested on the south facing slopes of Valtellina in Northern Italy. Deep ruby in colour, it has a complex and deep nose, beginning with cherries and strawberries, leading to a beautiful range of spices such as vanilla, anise and leather. The palate is intense, warm and deep. Balanced with fruity and mineral notes, with a round tannin for a long lasting finish.
Nebbiolo, classed as one of the finest Italian grapes is extremely difficult to find outside its native land of north-west Italy as it can only be planted specifically on south or south-west-facing slopes at an altitude between 250 and 450 m. This “Sforzato di Valtellina” is made from a selection of the finest Nebbiolo grapes picked around one week earlier than the main crop. Immediately after harvesting they are placed on wooded lattices to dry in a climate controlled room called a “fruttaio” and left to dry for a period of 2 to 2.5 months. During this period the grapes will lose about 40% of their volume which results in a rich aromatic, concentrated juice. The grapes cannot be pressed until at least the 10th of December.
